The second annual Ignite the Fire camp gave women and gender-diverse individuals a chance to step into the boots of a firefighter last weekend.

More than 20 participants joined instructors from Red Deer County Fire Services for three days of hands-on training, from handling fire extinguishers and hydrants to hose operations, live fire scenarios, and vehicle extrication.

The immersive program also covered search and rescue, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) use, entrapment simulations, ladders, and forcible entry. The camp closed with a high-energy relay race that highlighted teamwork and determination.

Organizers say the camp is designed to offer participants an authentic experience in the fire service and help them determine if it’s a path they want to pursue.

"The future of firefighting is bright," said Red Deer County in a social media post, thanking both participants and instructors for making the camp a success.
