With hot weather and heavy traffic expected over the Labour Day long weekend, Alberta RCMP are reminding motorists and boaters to make safety a priority.

Police say officers issued nearly 1,100 tickets during last year’s Labour Day weekend, including 990 for speeding, 35 for distracted driving, and 55 for not wearing a seatbelt. Ninety-two impaired drivers were also removed from the road.

To avoid similar risks this year, the  RCMP is urging drivers to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, trailers are properly secured, and that they leave with enough time to reach their destination safely. Motorists are also reminded to wear seatbelts, put cellphones out of reach, and never drive while tired or impaired.

On the water, officers recommend always wearing a lifejacket, swimming with a buddy, keeping children within sight, and using a spotter during water sports. They are also warning against operating a boat while impaired or underestimating currents and water conditions.

“With hot weather expected this long weekend, roads and bodies of water will be busy,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “By following road and water safety tips, we can help ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the weekend safely.”

For more water safety information, Albertans can visit the Lifesaving Society’s website, while traffic updates and safety tips are available on the RCMP in Alberta’s Facebook and X pages.
