The Weyburn Police Service has student safety at top of mind as schools are back in session today. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says officers are patrolling school zones closely during pick-up and drop-off times, especially as traffic adjusts to the busier mornings and afternoons.

“A little heavier in the beginning of the year for sure and the members have been out all morning. They'll be there after school as well, so just let's everyone get back into a routine. Once things get going, I know everyone gets used to it again, but it's been a summer without a lot of traffic in the mornings, and now it's going to be very busy.”

There are a variety of routes students take to get to and from school, including on foot. Drivers are reminded to be patient and watchful for students crossing the street.

St. John says drivers should also be aware of students taking the bus, stressing the importance of stopping both ways when the bus has it stop sign extended and lights flashing.

“Students go across the street as well so stop both ways. There are some buses that have video, so if you go through, your plate can be recorded, and you can receive a ticket for failing to stop for a bus stop signal."

He also encourages parents of students dropping off and picking up their children to be patient when navigating school zones.

“You're never in that much of a rush. Your child, even if you're dropping them off at school, they'll understand if you're a little late, there's no need to rush and not pay attention."

Other motorists heading through these zones are reminded to reduce their speed, be patient, and be aware of pedestrians and other vehicles. The WPS says this is important in ensuring students arrive and return from school safely.

“Other drivers without kids, just be aware. It's a lot busier out there now in the mornings. Take that extra time needed to get to where you need to go.”
