Organizers of the Dunrea Flea Market are celebrating another successful year, with record vendor participation and thousands of visitors enjoying a sunny day at the Boissevain Ag Grounds.
The annual event is held each year on the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend, hosted by the Boissevain Kinsmen and Kinettes.
“We couldn’t be happier,” said event organizer and Boissevain Kinsmen member. “We had more vendors than last year—over 130—and the grounds were full. The weather was fantastic, and everyone seemed to be in great spirits.”
This year’s market saw 1869 paid admissions, not including volunteers, vendor assistants, or children under 12. The sunny skies and warm temperatures helped draw crowds throughout the day, creating a vibrant hub of antique and collectible enthusiasts - and just general flea market lovers!
This year's flea market welcomed over 130 vendors to share their goods. And when it came time to pre-register for next year's sale, the numbers were up as well.
"We always try and encourage pre-registering for the next year, and you know those that are happy they'll usually book the day of the of the market," explains Bessant. "I don't have a tally or anything official, but our re-registrations are up. We think that our re-registrations at time of market are up by about 20%. We're not sure but we could tell by the number that came back into the office at the end of the day."
Adding to the festivity of the day, organizers noted that all food vendors reported strong sales as well. And of course, there were once again bunnies to put the smiles on many faces!
Funds raised through vendor fees and gate admissions will be reinvested into the Boissevain community. Past projects supported by the flea market include upgrades to Boissevain's aquatic center, the local skating rink, library, and theater. Community groups can apply for funding through the organizing club, which is committed to supporting local initiatives.
“It’s all about giving back,” added Bessant. “Once the bills are paid, the money goes right back into the community.”
The event as a whole is all about community; both vendors and buyers from the Boissevain area and surrounding towns and villages, but also from all parts of Manitoba and North Dakota. Friends and family reunite each year at the Dunrea Flea Market.
