The Shirley Carson Therapeutic Park in Lampman has launched a new program aimed at getting people of all ages moving while enjoying the outdoors.
Treasurer of the park committee, Monica Dukart, says the initiative, called Community in Motion, is all about encouraging residents to come out, walk, and connect.
“Initially, what we're trying to do is think of ways to encourage the community to use the therapeutic park, to enjoy all the beautiful flowers and trees,” said Dukart. “So we thought, why don’t we meet once a week and encourage the community to get moving?”
The walks, held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., last around 30 minutes to keep them accessible for everyone, including seniors. The program has already introduced themed evenings, such as a “pup walk” where participants could bring their dogs, and a bike night where riders and walkers split into two groups.
Dukart said the feedback has been positive. “The nice thing I found is that you get to visit with people on this walk that maybe you wouldn’t normally run into in your daily activities. That part has been really rewarding.”
The committee is working with Lampman’s recreation department and the health centre, and plans to reach out to schools to broaden involvement. While fall weather may soon limit outdoor options, Dukart said discussions are already underway about keeping the momentum going through the winter with activities on Lampman’s outdoor walking trail.
“We’re embracing whoever comes each Tuesday, whether it’s families, seniors, or young people,” she said. “Everybody brings their energy and a smile, and that’s what makes it enjoyable.”
