The Estevan Legion has begun long-awaited roof repairs, a project that leaders say is essential to keeping the facility open and operational.
House and Management Chairman Quinton Dosch confirmed that crews arrived this week and have started preparing equipment and materials for the job. “The roof is, after months of hard work and preparation, finally getting done,” said Dosch. “We did have leaks, and we had to get that taken care of or they’re just going to cause more problems.”
Legion President Frosty Forrest noted the scale of the investment, with the work expected to cost around half a million dollars. While the Legion has set aside some funds and received partial insurance support, the majority of the expenses are left to be covered. “Insurance would pay for some repairs on the roof, but they wouldn’t pay for a proper fix,” said Forrest. “It’s something that absolutely has to be done, or we don’t have a Legion hall anymore. And if we don’t have a Legion hall, it’s pretty hard for the organization to operate, too.”
Community members and businesses can assist with the project through donations, with the Legion recognizing contributors at various sponsorship levels. Supporters will be acknowledged in the media and on plaques displayed in the lobby. Contributions can be made by e-transfer to legionroof@sasktel.net or by calling the Legion at 306-634-3135.
Along with direct donations, the Legion has several fundraisers scheduled this fall, including a trade show on September 20, a steak night the same evening, and a live game show fundraiser on October 4. A monthly poker tournament series will also begin at the end of September, with proceeds going toward the roof project.
Forrest said the Legion hopes to avoid taking on debt to complete the work, relying instead on community support. “Preferably, we wouldn’t want to use financing, but it’s not something we can put off any longer,” he said.
