The Cochrane High Cobras football team has cracked the top 10 in their first week of play in the 4A division.

The division is made up of schools with student populations of 800 to 1,399. The Cobras were ranked eighth by Football Alberta after defeating the Chestermere Lakers 41-7.

Last year, the Cobras competed in the 3A division and advanced to the provincial championship game against their longtime rivals, the Holy Rosary Raiders. The Raiders are currently ranked No. 1 among 3A schools.

The Bow Valley Bobcats, who are also in the 4A division, dropped their opener 41-0 to the George McDougall Mustangs. The Mustangs are ranked third overall.

After one week of play, the Holy Trinity Academy Knights are ranked No. 1 after blanking the W.H. Croxford Cavaliers 56-0. Grande Prairie’s St. Joseph Catholic High School is ranked second.

The Cobras host their home opener tomorrow, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. against the Bert Church Chargers, who are coming off a 9-6 defensive battle loss to the Springbank Phoenix.

The Bobcats have the bye this week and return to action Sept. 12 against Springbank at Rundle College in Calgary.
