Several Red Deer service clubs are teaming up again this September for their fourth annual Service Club Day.
The Rotary Clubs of Red Deer, Red Deer East and Red Deer Sunrise, along with the Optimist and Kinsmen clubs, will carry out projects to support local non-profits throughout the month.
The campaign kicks off Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. with a proclamation from Mayor Ken Johnston in front of City Hall.
Each service club has selected a non-profit to receive $2,000 and up to 15 volunteers.
The Optimist Club will support Fairview Elementary School with painting the Buddy Bench, general upkeep and reading assessments with children. The Kinsmen Club will purchase storage bins for Dress for Success and help repack clothing for the fall on Sept. 13.
The Rotary Club of Red Deer will assist the Red Deer Christmas Bureau with its annual garage sale Sept. 18–20 and purchase toys for the fundraiser. The Rotary Club of Red Deer East will prepare and serve a meal to the unhoused at the Red Deer Soup Kitchen on Sept. 11. The Rotary Club of Red Deer Sunrise will help Aspire Child Development Centre set up for its Decadent Desserts fundraiser on Oct. 2, as well as purchase iPads for children.
“Serving others in the community who are in need is what our clubs have in common,” said Annette Eby, lead of this year’s Service Day event. “The volunteer portion is a huge part of this initiative, as we heard that non-profits are often short-staffed to do their important work.”
