Two men from Ponoka are facing charges after an armed robbery at the Royal Hotel earlier this year.

RCMP say a masked suspect entered the hotel bar with a firearm in the early morning of May 17 and stole a cash box. When two patrons chased the suspect outside, a second armed suspect allegedly threatened them.

Surveillance footage allowed investigators to identify the suspects, and arrest warrants were issued.

Garren Okeymow, 24, of Ponoka, is charged with:

  • Robbery

  • Using imitation firearm in commission of offence

  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

  • Failure to comply with release order condition

He was arrested Thursday and remanded into custody following a court appearance before a justice of the peace. His next court date is set for today at the Alberta Court of Justice in Ponoka.

Traytyn Okeymow, 27, of Ponoka, is charged with:

  • Robbery

  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

  • Using imitation firearm in commission of offence

  • Disguise with intent

  • Fail to comply with a probation order

  • Disobey a court order

RCMP say Traytyn Okeymow was already in custody on unrelated matters. His charges are scheduled to be addressed in court Sept. 12 in Ponoka.

“These investigations demonstrate the effectiveness of the collaborative efforts between our general duty members and our in-house GIS Unit … to bring offenders before the courts to be held accountable,” said Staff Sgt. Erin St-Cyr.
