Cooler weather with heavy wind and even some rain wasn't enough to stop Prairie Sky Co-op from hosting the first annual Customer Appreciation Barbecue on Thursday afternoon, with 21 staff members, two board members, and countless helpers behind the scenes to make it a success.

General Manager Kevin Arthur said the event served, "To thank our customers for sticking with us and supporting us." Previously, their community barbecue coincided with Equity Days, when members would pick up their equity cheques. However, since the cheques are now being mailed out for the convenience of their members, the barbecues are now a chance for everyone in the community to enjoy.

"Events like this highlight the importance of shopping local. When you support Prairie Sky Co-op, you’re helping to strengthen our community."

Due to the inclement weather, bouncy houses and face-painting were moved to Knox Hall, but the food was served just outside of the Food Store, with 480 burgers and 105 hot dogs served, 497 people registering and entering a door prize draw, as well as six new members of the Kids Club families signed up, and six new free Co-op memberships handed out.

While the event was free, there was an opportunity for guests to make a donation to the Weyburn Humane Society, which generated more than $900 raised for the organization.
