The 42nd Annual Parent Child Tournament at TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club saw one of its biggest turnouts yet, with 79 teams taking part on Sunday, September 7. The event, which has been a long-standing tradition in Estevan, featured families of all ages enjoying a day on the course under warm and pleasant weather conditions.
Junior chairman Jeff Carlisle said the growth of the tournament shows how much golf is expanding in the community. “We had great attendance this year with great help from the parents and grandparents,” said Carlisle. “It is good to see that golf is growing here in Estevan and that families are enjoying the game together.”
The tournament, which follows the Rondeau age scoring system, gave every junior participant a medal, while division winners also received trophies. Lunch was served after play wrapped up.
In the three-year-old group, Riggs George placed first with a score of 49, followed by Sutter Skjonsby with 51 and Benjamin Erdie with 59.
The Mother Daughter Junior Division was won by Rylee Gallaway, who shot 51, followed by Brinley Hengen at 54 and Margot Erdie at 58. In the Mother Son Junior Division, five-year-old Cruse Wheeler posted a score of 44 to win, with Riggs George second at 49 and Reiker Wilhelm third at 56.
The Father-Daughter Junior Division saw a familiar name at the top once again, as Lila Donovan finished first for the fourth straight year with a score of 38, the lowest score of the day. Emrie Hammett and Kendall Bakke tied for second with 46.
In the Father Son Junior Division, which had 29 entries, Xander Erdie claimed first place with 39, followed by Maddux Friess with 41 and a tie for third between Sutter Hoium and Bryson Bakken, both shooting 42.
The senior divisions also showcased strong play. In the Mother Daughter Senior Division, Madelyn Stead won with 45, ahead of Zyla Hammett with 50 and Meeka Gedak with 53. In the Father-Daughter Senior Division, Eva Gedak posted a score of 40 for first place, with Abigail Jutras in second at 44 and Natalie Currie third at 48.
The Father Son Senior Division winner was Cashton Symons with 40, followed by Myles Lequyer with 42 and Roenick Pratt with 43. The lone entry in the Mother Son Senior Division was Hugh Ross, who finished with a score of 51.
Carlisle said the success of the event and the steady rise in junior membership show the bright future of the sport locally. “We are here to help any kids who want to take the game competitively,” he explained. “It is great to see more kids coming out and getting involved.”
This year’s Wednesday morning junior program was also well attended, and organizers are already looking forward to another fun season next summer.
