The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings picked up their first win of the preseason Saturday night, as they skated to a 5-4 win in a shootout over the Millionaires in Melville.
Melville would have a strong hold in the first half of the game, with Alex Morrison scoring on the power play with 4:50 remaining in the first period. Then, Zach Anderson scored with 8:14 left on the clock in the second, and Preston Baerwald got the puck past Nate Stevens with 7:27 to go to give the home team a 3-0 lead.
The Red Wings would then answer back as Ryder Rommelaere scored with 4:42 remaining in the middle frame, assisted by Lucas Schmid and Dylan Westmann. Talen Lewis would then score 2:31 into the third period, assisted by Rommelaere, to pull Weyburn within one.
The Millionaires restored the two-goal lead just under two minutes later, when Rylan Oatman scored, but then special teams would help out the Red Wings.
First, with 9:28 to play, Simon Martin would score a power play goal, assisted by Josh Sale and Lucas Schmid. Then, Aidan Mohan scored with 3:59 to go in regulation. His goal, scored shorthanded, was unassisted.
Overtime would solve nothing, meaning a shootout was needed. The shootout would go seven rounds before Schmid would score, giving the Red Wings the 5-4 victory.
The Red Wings will now get set for their final two preseason games, a home-and-home against the Estevan Bruins. The first game will be Tuesday night at the Whitecap Resources Centre in Weyburn, before the two teams meet again on Wednesday at Affinity Place in Estevan.
