Lawrence Simpert Bernhard
August 9, 1930 – September 5, 2025
It is in loving memory that the family announces the passing of Lawrence Simpert Bernhard, 95 years, of Humboldt on September 5, 2025 at St. Mary’s Villa. Lawrence was born on August 9, 1930 to August and Philomina (nee Mayer) Bernhard. The family lived on a farm north of Muenster. Lawrence attended Veronika School for grades 1-8. He worked on the family farm and with neighboring farmers before taking a job at a bush camp in northern Ontario in the early 1950s. He returned to farming in Saskatchewan in the spring of 1952 and on August 5, 1952 married Rose Zintel at St. Gertrude Church. They raised their family of four, two sons and two daughters, on farmland southeast of Muenster. Lawrence and Rose ran a mixed farming operation until 1988 when they retired to Humboldt. In addition to farming, Lawrence trained with H & R Block to complete tax returns and provided this service until his mid-80s. Lawrence served on the Board of Directors for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, the Muenster Co-op Association and the Muenster Community Centre. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and active in St. Peter’s Parish in Muenster and St. Augustine Parish in Humboldt. Lawrence enjoyed golfing, fishing, curling, reading, puzzles and playing cards. He also loved sightseeing and especially enjoyed visiting the birthplaces of his parents during a trip to Germany in 1985. Lawrence relished gatherings of family and friends. He once shared with a grandson that he’d always dreamed of having a motorcycle – perhaps Lawrence is riding a Harley in heaven. Lawrence is lovingly remembered by his four children, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren: DOREEN (Brian) Stomp of Muenster and family Craig (Heather) Stomp and children Ben & Camryn of Humboldt, Karrie (Geoff) Blackbeard and children Blake & Logan of Marsden, and Scott (Darla) Stomp and son Jack of Calgary, AB; ALLAN (Debbie) Bernhard of Humboldt and family Christopher (Maggie) Bernhard and children Clark & Bram of Saskatoon and Cameron (Chelsea) Bernhard and children Holden & Esme of Brooks, AB; CAROL (Rod) Sebastian of Sherwood Park, AB and family Matthew (Zoé) Sebastian of Dartmouth, NS; and DAVID (Lisa) Bernhard and family Dylan Bernhard and Cole Bernhard, all of Edmonton, AB; and his brother George Bernhard of Humboldt. Lawrence was predeceased by his wife, Rose; his parents August and Philomina; his sister Josephine, his brother Walter (Eloise) and his sister-in-law Hildegard (George’s wife); his mother and father-in-law Ed and Josephine Zintel and all of Rose’s siblings – Elizabeth, Sr. Antonia, OSU, Bernard and John. The funeral mass was held on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 10:30 am at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, con-celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy and Fr. Frank Offin-Sekyere. Internment followed at the St. Augustine Parish Columbarium. Memorial donations in Lawrence’s memory may be directed to St. Mary’s Villa Building Fund, St. Augustine Parish or the Humboldt Hospital Foundation.
