This summer, one Weyburn family decided to bring a unique experience to the Opportunity City.
“This summer we’ve been doing a pretty fun thing in our family with the keychain library outside of our house,” said Jessica Hunter, the woman behind this initiative. “We got the idea off of TikTok, from an artist named Mike Bennett, who started it in Portland and we thought we’d bring it to Weyburn.”
The keychain library is not only a unique opportunity to keep her family busy, but to also get the community involved in their projects.
“Basically, you drop off any trinket (in the library). We’ve had people drop off homemade trinkets, brooches, dice, toys, plastic toys work great, and then our family has been turning them into keychains. We hang them back up and you can come grab whatever keychain speaks to you.”
She added that it was a great activity to get her kids involved with while also taking care of some of the toys they had laying around.
“I have three kids and we have a lot of little toys laying around,” she laughed. “So I thought this is a great way to use them up and a fun thing for our family to do all summer.”
She added that the community support and reaction has been great.
“We saw some little girls very excited to see their charms turned into keychains and we’ve gotten a lot of texts from people saying they found the perfect keychain for themselves, which has been fun.”
She also added that people have been helping keep the supply up, dropping off more than just trinkets.
“People have been dropping off more than they’ve been taking, so we have a pretty good stash right now and some people have been dropping off supplies for us, which is nice because we’ve been paying for the keychain supplies. It’s been awesome.”
She added that, while they will take a break this winter, she plans on bringing back the keychain library in the spring.
You can check out the library by visiting 1823 Eaglesham Avenue.
“We invite you to come check it out and engage with it and have some fun.”
