With students across the province returning to classrooms, Alberta RCMP are reminding families and drivers to take extra precautions on the roads.
Police say the start of the school year means busier streets, more pedestrians, and increased traffic around schools and neighbourhoods.
“Back to school can be a busy time,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following some basic tips and giving yourself extra time, everyone can have a safer commute.”
RCMP are urging parents and guardians to walk children through safe routes to and from school, practice crossing the street at crosswalks, and teach kids the importance of making eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road. They also advise against chasing after a bus or using devices like phones and headphones while walking, as these can distract children near traffic.

Drivers are also being asked to slow down in school zones, watch for pedestrians, and remember it is illegal to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing. Police note that motorists should be especially cautious in the early mornings or evenings when visibility is reduced.
“Don’t assume pedestrians see you,” added Turnbull. “Always make eye contact before turning to ensure everyone is aware of one another.”
The RCMP says a few simple precautions by both drivers and families can help ensure students get to and from school safely.
