A Central Alberta father of two is preparing to travel to Germany for a complex spinal surgery that is not available to him in Canada, following years of debilitating back pain.
Dalyn Parada, a resident of Eckville, has been struggling with severe spinal issues for several years. After exhausting treatment options within the Canadian health-care system, he has been referred to a specialized spine surgery centre in Germany — considered one of the world’s leading programs for this type of procedure.
The surgery involves two discectomies and the possible implantation of an intervertebral cage, with a projected recovery time of four to six months. The total cost of the surgery, including hospital care, meals and rehabilitation, is estimated at $75,000.
That figure does not include travel expenses, accommodations or meals for Parada’s wife, Shan, who will accompany him to Germany, or the cost of living during his extended recovery period back home.
“Dalyn has reached a point where surgery is the only path forward,” said a family spokesperson. “This procedure will allow him to regain mobility and get back to doing everyday tasks that most of us take for granted.”
Friends and family have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the associated expenses and provide some financial relief during Parada’s recovery. Supporters describe the couple as generous, dependable and selfless — the kind of people who show up for others, even when navigating challenges of their own.
“They never ask for help, but now they need it,” said the spokesperson. “This is a chance for the community to rally behind them.”
Dalyn and Shan are the parents of two young daughters. The family hopes to travel to Germany in the coming months, depending on how quickly the necessary funds can be raised.
