Chris Leckie, Fire Chief for the MacGregor Fire Department, says the Glow Golf fundraiser is set for September 20 at the MacGregor Golf Course. Registration begins at 7 p.m., with tee-off at 8 p.m.
“The night golf is happening on September 20th, and you have the MacGregor Golf Course, and it's a fundraiser for the MacGregor Fire Department,” says Leckie.
The department ran the event years ago before pausing it, then revived it last year with strong support.
“We did it many, many years ago,” notes Leckie. “And we just brought it back last year as just to get it going again. And it turned out to be a really good hit. And everybody seemed to have a great time. And we thought we would just keep it going.”
Fundraising for new equipment
The tournament supports a long-term equipment project that the department has been working toward for several years.
“Well, we're working on a project right now for the fire department,” says Leckie. “And we'll be able to unveil it here shortly, something we've been kind of fundraising for for many years and we are actually in the process of pretty soon Mike will be able to let everybody know what we've done with the funds and it's a specialty equipment for sure that helps us with our all of our needs that we have here in municipality.”
Leckie adds the event should help bring the project to its final stages.
“No, this will actually help us in the final, final parts of the project,” he says. “And yeah, we're looking really, we're looking forward to it. And yeah, we can't, you know, thank the community and all our sponsors, they're helping us out with this fundraiser. It's going to be a great evening.”
Fun for all ages
The chief explains that glow golf offers something different from a regular tournament and appeals to new players every year.
“You know, years ago, when we did it for a few years, kind of ran its course a little bit back then,” adds Leckie. “But ever since, we've kind of brought it back. And I don't know if it's been since. It's just such a different type of event. A lot of people like going golfing and it's the sport is kind of more or less since has taken off a little bit more in the past than it then like now it's it's you can't there's there's always someone on the golf course and it's something new and it's something that everybody wants to try and every time we try this go out and put this on we get you know new golfers all the time they want to try it and they don't have to be, it's not competitive. Everybody's out there. It's for a fun time. And yeah, it's just a great family event and it's fun to do and everybody seems to love it. So we'll just keep on doing that.”
Lights, glow sticks, and decorated carts
The event features glow-in-the-dark golf balls, illuminated flag poles, and glow sticks marking hazards and tee boxes.
“Yeah, the balls glow,” says Leckie. “The poles are all glow sticks too as well. Every little area out on the on the golf course, we've added some extra glow this year. So, you know, they'll see more around like sand traps and the hazard areas where, you know, the tee up boxes and all that will be lit up. And yeah, it's fun to see. It's fun to do. All the carts are all decorated. Everybody decorates their carts. We have prizes for best decorated carts and best decorated golfer, right? So, I mean, there's lots of lots of fun to be had.”
He continues that participants often get creative with their outfits, making it just as much a spectacle as a game.
“Oh, yeah, they people, they go all out,” Leckie says. “And you know, it's cool to see and it's all for fun, and I think everybody enjoys that. It's the last tournament of the year for the golf course, and we'll look forward to it as much as they do.”
