Cochrane town council is wrapping up its four-year term tonight with a parting gift in recognition of its service to the community.
The council received a plaque thanking members for their service from 2021 to 2025, featuring the distinct Cochrane brand.
The same council elected in 2017 was returned in 2021 from a field of 19 candidates. Mayor Jeff Genung was uncontested in his re-election bid.
“While I know some of you are seeking re-election and may return, I think it’s still worth pausing, reflecting and noting the work that was done over the last four years by this elected body to steward the community through a lot of opportunities and a lot of challenges,” said town CAO Mike Derricott.
“Each of you know — and I think especially your loved ones and families know — the time, effort and work that goes into serving on town council. In my opinion, it is worth acknowledging the work that each of you have put forward. Seeking and holding public office is an increasingly courageous thing to do, and I think it should be honoured.”
All but one councillor is seeking re-election on Oct. 20, with two members running for mayor.
Coun. Susan Flowers confirmed tonight she will not be seeking a third term.
With nomination day just two weeks away, the list of candidates continues to grow. Fourteen candidates have registered to run for town council, and a fifteenth, Todd Muir, has filed a letter of intent.
Mayor Jeff Genung is being challenged by Morgan Nagel and Dean Hopkins.
Nominations close Sept. 22 at noon. Election day is Oct. 20, with four advance polling stations.
