The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is warning the public after it received multiple reports of scam calls from people claiming to be WPS.
The WPS Communication Centre is continuing to receive numerous reports from people being contacted by telephone by individuals who have been identifying themselves as “Winnipeg Police”.
The reports have come from Manitobans, as well as various provinces, all indicating these calls falsely originated from the WPS non-emergency number of “204-986-6222”.
The WPS wants to remind the public that law enforcement agencies will never call them to request personal information or funds. They encourage people to never disclose any personal information about bank accounts, identification numbers, credit cards, or personal finances to anyone.
For anyone who has experienced a financial loss or identity theft because of these scam calls, they can report the matter to the police in person or by calling the non-emergency line at 204-986-6222.
For incidents like internet, phone, or text scams, or if people haven’t lost money, they can report directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center.
