SaskEnergy will be conducting a controlled natural gas flaring on Thursday morning near the town of Midale.

The flaring is scheduled to take place at a block valve site within the R.M. of Cymri, approximately 15 kilometres northeast of Midale. According to a public safety announcement from the Crown corporation, the work will run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 11th, though the timing is subject to change based on operating needs.

Residents and drivers in the area may see a 40-foot flame emitted from a temporary flare stack attached to SaskEnergy's infrastructure.

The flaring is a necessary step to perform maintenance on the natural gas line system. The process involves isolating a section of the line and removing the existing gas through a controlled burn. SaskEnergy states that flaring is an industry-standard practice that reduces the carbon footprint of the vented gas by 85 per cent.

The company assures the public that the area will be supervised to ensure safety.

Residential natural gas service in the area will not be affected by the maintenance work. Both the R.M. of Cymri and Midale-Cymri Fire and Rescue have been notified of the event.
