Melvin Nystuen
August 20, 1932 – September 10, 2025
The peaceful death of Melvin Palmer Nystuen, 93 years, of Spalding, occurred on Wednesday September 10, 2025 at Humboldt District Hospital with his daughter Lois at his side. Melvin was born in the Spalding district on August 20, 1932 to Alfred and Magna (nee Olson) Nystuen. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Spalding. He met Doris Betnar during his school years and they were married on January 14, 1955 at Spalding. The pair were blessed with six children who kept them busy with their many activities. Melvin and Doris both worked at the Spalding Coop and he managed the farm supply store. Melvin loved sports, curling and playing ball in his younger years, travelling to many sports days around the area. He also enjoyed watching golf, curling, hockey and the Blue Jays on TV. He retired from the Co-op at 55 and then opened the Spalding Coffee Shop which they ran from 1987 – 2001. Melvin was a very social person who enjoyed visiting with friends and family alike so this new career suited him well. He worked 24/7 and taught his children a good work ethic by having them all work with him in some capacity. He was very meticulous about neatness and cleanliness to an extreme. After all the hours at the café, he still enjoyed cooking and looking after household duties at home. Melvin and Doris were fortunate to travel to many destinations within Canada and the United States, of which a Maritime bus trip and Hawaii were highlights, as well as Spain and Norway. Melvin’s role as grandpa brought him his greatest joy. Being surrounded by his family meant everything to him. He lived independently until July when his health began failing and he was admitted to Humboldt District Hospital where he remained until his passing. During that time, every grandchild and great grandchild came in to see him, giving him the best gift in his last days. Melvin will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 70 years DORIS Nystuen of Spalding; five children, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild: LOIS (Ted) Nystuen-Ross of Spalding and family Rene Corriveau (Lisa) and Danielle Corriveau (Dallas) and children Piper and Ripley, all of Saskatoon; LYNN Robblee of Saskatoon and family Darren (Whitney) Robblee and children Sage and Ty of Surrey, BC, Jamie (Clint) Tallmadge of Warman and children Emily Tallmadge (Blake) of Saskatoon, Charlize Tallmadge (Kevin) and daughter Lorelei of Saskatoon, Brooke Tallmadge (Porter) and Zoey Tallmadge, all of Warman; GLEN (Linda) Nystuen of Saskatoon and family Ryan (Justine) Magnus and children Ryden and Eli, Christian Magnus, Kaitlyn Nystuen (Travis) and Kalli (Rylan) Kleiter; DEAN (Wendy) Nystuen of Saskatoon and family Brendon (Sheena) Nystuen and children Aubrey and Mason of Martensville, Kenton (Sarah) Nystuen and baby due in October of Saskatoon, and Jaydon Nystuen (Emma) of Saskatoon; and JACKIE (Wes) Schultz of Spalding and family Jenna (Kevin) Patterson of Archerwill, and Dayna Schultz of Thessaloniki, Greece.
