The Estevan Roller Derby Club welcomed newcomers to the sport this week with a successful Try-It Night, giving participants a chance to lace up their skates and learn the basics.

The evening focused on teaching balance, one-foot strides and the unique challenge of moving on four wheels. Organizers said it was exciting to watch the progress unfold over the course of just an hour.

“They did amazing,” said coach Brandy McCaskill. “At the start, some could barely stand up. By the end, they were skating, doing strides, and even learning how to fall properly.”

The club runs two sessions each year, from September to December and from January to May. Beginners in the Learn to Skate program practice once a week, while those who move up levels can expect two practices per week.

While the Estevan team is still small, the group regularly joins forces with roller derby clubs in Regina and Swift Current to form full teams for scrimmages and games. Players also have opportunities to travel to Alberta, Saskatoon and beyond to gain experience.

“There’s always games to be played if you want to play,” McCaskill said. “Scrimmages are fun because your name just goes into a hat and teams are made up on the spot. It’s a great way to learn and play with different people.”

Another Try-It Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. The club encourages anyone interested to give it a shot at least twice before committing.

“It’s just a good time,” McCaskill said. “It’s something different for kids to try, something they probably never thought of before.”
