Go Green has sprouted another huge community effort once again in Swift Current.

Beginning last Friday, the annual green space initiative was launched at Market Square alongside the launch of 50/50 For Change, which is in support of the Southwest Facility Foundation this year.

Darcy Congdon, director of operations for Stark & Marsh, which heads up the Go Green initiative along with Innovation Federal Credit Union, was thrilled to see 110 people register for Go Green at Market Square.

"There's also been some other people walking up as well," said Congdon. "We're probably north of 110, for sure."

Go Green is a partnership between Stark & Marsh, Innovation Federal Credit Union, and the City of Swift Current that has been ongoing for 16 consecutive years. Congdon said Innovation Federal Credit Union has been with them on this venture for eight years..

Day one of Go Green saw 11 different park spaces being renovated with new trees, shrubs, bushes and flower bed improvements. In total, over 450 trees are planned to be planted this year.

One of the big projects that they started with on opening day was the recent addition to the Chinook Walking Path near Sports Check. The Innovation Federal Credit Union was joined by a City crew, who were hard at work planting close to 100 trees along the walkway.

"I think the community appreciates it," said Congdon on the work they do during Go Green. "I went in to get my coffee at Tim Horton's a few years ago, and somebody looked at my Stark & Marsh shirt, and she said, 'Aren't you the tree people?'. So I really think it's something people see and appreciate."

In total, Go Green has planted more than 4,500 trees in Swift Current throughout all of its 16 years.
