Lisa Voth, executive director of Portage Day Care, says the organization is one of the grateful recipients of the Co-op Fuel Good Day Fundraiser. Proceeds from the event, which gives five cents per litre of fuel sales to selected organizations, will be shared between Portage Day Care and Carman Wellness.

It happens Tuesday (today) at Homestead Co-op stations on Portage la Prairie

“Well, we applied to be those recipients and we got in,” notes Voth. “So, what happens is people can come and fill up their vehicles and proceeds of those sales, I think it's five cents per litre, goes to Portage Daycare and the Carman Wellness and we're going to share those and we will then divvy that up between all of our sites and they are going to be allocated to the playgrounds.”

Voth says it is the first time Portage Day Care has been chosen for the program, making the announcement especially exciting for the staff and families.

Funds directed toward playground upgrades

The organization operates four different facilities, with six playgrounds in total. Voth explains that some of the play areas need major improvements, while others only need smaller upgrades.

“We have four different facilities and within those four facilities, there are six different playgrounds. And some of them need a little bit of help and some of them need a lot of help,” says Voth. “So we're hoping to put the funds toward adding maybe more nature-based things in some of our playgrounds, and maybe some more larger items for the children to play on or play with.”

Locations across Portage and Southport

Voth outlines where each of the facilities is located.

  • The preschool site is at 36 Second Street Southwest, with two playgrounds.
  • Another daycare is in the lower level of the Portage Learning and Literacy Centre, with a small playground behind the building.
  • The infant and school-age facility at 132 Duke Avenue has a large playground with separate sections for babies and older children.
  • In addition, there is a playground at Southport connected to the Rec Plex.

More than 150 children benefit

Voth emphasizes that proceeds from Fuel Good will directly impact the 152 licensed spaces across all four facilities.

“We would love and appreciate anyone who filled up their vehicle today to help us to, you know, get to our goal of building beautiful playgrounds for the children in care,” adds Voth. “And we just want to give a huge thank you to anybody who can do that today.”

Voth continues that all of the upgrades will benefit not only current children but future generations, as well.
