Minds in Motion, a program offered by the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, is preparing to launch its fall session in Portage la Prairie. Regional coordinator Pam Anderson says the initiative is designed for the following people.
“Minds in Motion is a group that we have that's run throughout the province in various locations, and it's for mild to moderate folks with dementia and their care partners. It's an eight-week program that runs a few times a year. And it is really a time for people to come together. It's a time of fitness, fun, and friendship,” notes Anderson.
Participants take part in gentle chair exercises, conversation over coffee, and a variety of games. Activities range from floor curling and lawn bowling to golf and board games, with the goal of encouraging both physical activity and social interaction.
Small group setting
The fall program begins Wednesday, September 17, running from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Herman Prior Activity Centre. Anderson says nearly all of the spaces are filled.
“We've got maybe one or two spots that are still open. Otherwise, we've kind of reached capacity. We like to keep it right around 11 couples that come so that we can just really continue with the integrity of the program, really making it a small, intimate sort of group where we get to know each other and really be a benefit to both the people that have dementia as well as their care partners,” says Anderson.
Positive response
Anderson says participants have embraced the program and look forward to each session.
“Minds in Motion has been going on and hasn't always had a great turnout in Portage la Prairie. But I think as people have come to be part of the program, in my experience, since I've been here is people really, really look forward to it. They look sad when the eight weeks are finished and they're eagerly asking, 'When do we start up again?'” adds Anderson.
She continues that the program is built around connection and enjoyment.
“I think it's a really fun time where we just really focus on being together, connecting with each other, and having lots of fun,” says Anderson.
Cost and registration
Couples can join at any point during the eight-week program, with fees adjusted accordingly.
“If they started late, we would just adjust the payments to match that,” continues Anderson. “If anybody's interested, they can come to the Herman Prior Activity Centre and ask at the front desk or phone me directly and ask.”
