A tail end summer storm that swept through Regina and surrounding areas is being called one of the most significant of the summer for auto-related insurance claims.

As of Monday afternoon, SGI reported more than 513 auto claims linked to the storm, which hit communities including Regina, Pilot Butte, Emerald Park, and Balgonie. The damage includes vehicles impacted by hail and flooding, according to Heather Hubic, SGI's Manager of Media Relations.

"These are preliminary numbers, but they do indicate that it will be one of the largest storms of the summer when it comes to auto claims,” said Hubic.

The storm brought intense rainfall and hail, with localized flooding affecting roads, underpasses, and residential areas. Hail ranging in size from peas to toonies was reported in several regions, including White City and Balgonie.

In addition to vehicle damage, SGI Canada received 17 hail-related property claims and 22 sewer backup and water protection claims by Monday afternoon. However, Hubic noted these figures only reflect claims submitted through SGI Canada and do not account for reports made to other insurers.

“Given these are early numbers, we do expect the volume of claims to increase as people continue to assess the damage and submit their reports,” she said.

Residents have up to two years from the date of loss to complete repairs or settle a total loss after submitting a claim.

SGI is urging residents to take steps to protect their property and vehicles in anticipation of future storms.

Hubic advised motorists to avoid parking under large trees or unstable structures, and to move vehicles into garages whenever a storm is forecasted.

For homeowners, she recommended regular maintenance to minimize risk:

  • Clear debris from eavestroughs and window wells to improve drainage

  • Ensure water flows away from the foundation of the home

  • Install and maintain sump pumps and sewer backflow valves to help prevent basement flooding

“These simple precautions can make a big difference in reducing storm-related damage,” Hubic said. “It’s important to do these checks before and after a storm to make sure everything is functioning as it should.”

Customers can submit both auto and property claims online at mysgi.ca, through their local insurance broker, or by calling SGI directly at 1-844-855-2744.
