To protect the vulnerable population against COVID-19 and the Omicron variant the province is rolling out the fourth dose of the mRNA vaccine to eligible residents.

The introduction of the fourth dose came after information was provided by the Ontario Immunization Advisory Committee.

The Medical Officer of Health for the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU), Dr. Kit Young Hoon explained the changes in fourth dose eligibility.

“Effective immediately residents of long-term care homes, retirement homes, elder care lodges, and older adults living in other congregant settings are eligible for the fourth dose of an mRNA vaccine.

In order to receive the newest COVID-19 vaccine dose, eligible residents will have had to let at least three months pass since their third dose.

Young Hoon wanted to ensure people know that being vaccinated is the best protection against the COVID-19 virus.

Those that are eligible and want to get their fourth dose can book an appointment through the NWHU online booking site, or through local pharmacies and health agencies.

The health unit will be offering large-scale vaccine clinics in January and February to accommodate those wanting their first, second, third, or fourth dose of the vaccine.

As of January 5, 2022, the NWHU is reporting a vaccination rate of 87.6 per cent of all ages to have gotten their first dose, 79.6 per cent have received their second dose, and 30.4 per cent have rolled up their sleeves and gotten all three doses.
