The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will be looking to do more than just practice over the next few days.

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings found themselves with a rare weekend off when it was announced that the Yorkton Terriers, whom the Wings were scheduled to play Friday night, and the Notre Dame Hounds, the opponents on deck for Saturday, had both entered five-day pauses due to COVID-19. With the time now off, head coach of the Red Wings, Cody Mapes, got to work to find ways to keep his players active.

The team has some activities planned for Friday night and then will be on the ice Saturday. However, they won’t be playing any SJHL opponents.

“We’ve set up a little fun exhibition game with the bantam AA team here in the city,” Mapes said. The scrimmage will likely see the rosters intermingled, with players from the junior A squad skating alongside the younger players. After the fun in the morning, the team will then be heading out to the outdoor rink at the Weyburn Credit Union Spark Centre.

“We’ll be out there at 3 o’clock on Saturday, and you know, everybody’s welcome to come,” Mapes said, reminding people to bring their skates and sticks as they will be out there for a while.

The Red Wings will be back on the ice for SJHL action this coming Tuesday when they head out to Kindersley for a pair of games against the Klippers. Both games will be broadcast live on Red Wing Radio BIG106.
