Chief and Council of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation have announced the removal of their checkpoints entering into the community effective midnight February 2, 2022.
“We are now in Step Two of the Ontario Roadmap to Reopen and taking into account the successful vaccination efforts within our community. The Chief and Council have determined the checkpoints are no longer a necessity to help protect our community and the membership,” the Nation said in a prepared statement.
Checkpoints have been in place in their community since March 29, 2020, to protect their community against COVID-19.
Security presence has been at the entry points to the community by land and off ice roads.
A couple of times throughout the pandemic the community implemented two-week lockdowns.
