As Ontario moves into step one of a three-step plan to reopen the province today (January 31, 2022) the Kenora Catholic, Keewatin Catholic, and Rainy River District Schools Boards have made a decision towards the return of extra-curricular activities.
The school boards have decided that as of January 31, 2022, all extra-curricular activities can resume regular practices.
Participants practicing need to follow all health and safety protocols, especially masking, and no spectators will be permitted to attend practices.
An email from the Rainy River District School Board explained the decision on school competitions.
The email read, “The presence of the Omicron variant within the region has resulted in increased staff absenteeism. As the continuity of learning is the primary focus of our school, all competitions and performances are paused for the time being. Due to this pause, participation in provincial competitions and events is similarly suspended.”
Moving forward the three directors will meet again in early February to review current health and safety guidance and measures.
Extra-curricular activities have been paused since January 5, 2022, as the increase of the Omicron variant forced the province to move into a Modified Step-Two, which halted sports.
