Health Minister Jason Copping provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in Alberta. He says numbers continue to be trending downwards.
“I am pleased to share that almost all our indicators continue to trend downward. After a difficult fifth wave that brought so much uncertainty over the past few months. This is very welcome news,” said the Health Minister.
He says there are 68 per cent fewer cases today compared to the beginning of February.
Here’s a look at the latest numbers for the past 24 hours:
- 791 new cases of COVID-19
- 27 per cent positivity rate for lab-confirmed cases
- 11,189 confirmed active cases
- 13 new deaths have been reported due to COVID-19
- 1,373 in hospital
- 90 people in ICU
The Health Minister says surgeries are at 95 per cent surgical volume but that his team is working to support them.
“AHS is currently completing about 95 per cent of normal surgical volume and my department and I are supporting them to get back to 100 per cent as soon as possible and then, to go even higher,” said Copping.
Copping continues to ask Albertans to ensure they receive their all of their doses of COVID-19 vaccines. He noted that there is a particular gap in the immunization of children.
“Currently 47.2 per cent of children and youth have received at least one dose and only 24 per cent have received two doses,” said Copping.
To encourage more vaccines for children and youth, the Health Minister says he will be bolstering accessibility to allow parents and guardians more flexibility.
“From March 2nd to 16th, AHS clinics across the province will offer walk-in options including evenings and weekends with some clinics beginning to offer walk-in doses starting this week,” said Copping.
Walk-in appointments will be offered on weekdays from 3PM to 8PM and on weekends from noon to 6PM. Pharmacies with extended hours in certain communities including Red Deer will also be able to administer vaccines to children.
