The Airdrie Lightning U18 AA female team has advanced to a provincial qualifier this weekend in Alberta Female Hockey League action.

The Lightning has six players from the Cochrane area that helped them eliminate the Rocky Mountain Raiders two games straight in the first round last week.

They now face the Calgary Fire White in the south division final.

Rowan Bremner, one of the six Cochrane area players, says if they win, they'll advance to the provincials.

She's expecting a close series.

"We've beaten them a couple of times, and they've beaten us a couple of times, but the score is always really close in each of the games, and it's always fun and fast."

The Lightning shut out the Raiders at home, 3-0, in the first of the best-of-three series, and there was only a one-goal difference in their 4-3 win.

She says winning against the Raiders was sweet for the Lightning. The Raiders had their number in the regular season.

"They were usually close games, but a lot of the time they beat us, so that made it more exciting to win."

Cheering loud and proud for the Lightning in the opening game of the series were players from the U11A Jr. Chaos.

Bremner says they could hear the cheers from the stands.

"Then they came for autographs after the game, which was really cute."

Also playing for the Lightning from the Cochrane area are Isla Gosselin-Berg, Drew White, Jocelyn Elliott, Toryn Bosanko, and Reese Deibert.

Game One against Calgary Fire White is tonight in Calgary. The series returns to Airdrie tomorrow and wraps up no later than Sunday.
