Officers in Portage la Prairie got the rare chance to use their spike belt earlier this week.

Monday afternoon (April 4), Manitoba RCMP received information from Moosomin RCMP that a man driving a stolen vehicle had refused to stop, attempted to ram officers, and fled on Highway 1 going eastbound.

A description of the vehicle was obtained, and RCMP officers in the Brandon area spotted the vehicle travelling at a speed of over 200 km/hr along Highway 1. An attempt to stop the vehicle was unsuccessful, and the last known sighting was relayed to Portage la Prairie RCMP.

Officers in Portage set up along Highway 1, and when the suspect vehicle approached, a spike belt was deployed. The suspect's vehicle collided with the spike belt and continued to drive for a short distance before going off the road and into the ditch.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot from the vehicle but was subsequently arrested.

He was also wanted on several outstanding warrants out of Ontario.

Daniel Legue, 27, of Cornwall, Ontario, has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Flight from a Peace Officer
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime x2

Legue was remanded into custody.
