Environment Canada says residents will wake up to a bunch of snow on Thursday (April 14, 2022) as a Colorado Low continues to blast through the region.
Steven Flisfeder, Environment Canada Meteorologist, said Wednesday afternoon, the bulk of the snow was expected to fall Wednesday night into Thursday (April 13, 2022).
“By tomorrow morning [Thursday] we should be seeing totals including what fell already today [Wednesday] of totals of about 10-20 cm,” said Flisfeder.
Moving into Thursday afternoon, the agency is predicting only light flurries, with an additional 5 cm of snow estimated.
Flisfeder noted that as of around noon on Wednesday, the Kenora Airport recorded only around 4 cm of snow. He noted that the heavy wind gusts have made recording data for the airport difficult.
Friday is moving day for the spring storm Flisfeder said, as only light flurries are expected throughout the area.
“It’s still going to be as a result of the same system, it’s just moving further north and east so less intense and more like a flurry activity so accumulation should be fairly low.”
“You should be seeing those flurries come to end by early to mid-afternoon if not that early then definitely by the evening time on Friday.”
On Saturday, following the Friday storm departure, residents can expect some sunshine and a definite reprieve from the storm.
Flisfeder wanted to mention though, that the temperatures will still be below zero nearing the end of the week and into the weekend.
“It’s still going to be colder for Thursday, Friday, and even into Saturday. As the system shifts east and north it’s going to pull cold air down in its wayside. Thursday and Friday's daytime highs are only going to be around minus 3, minus 4 degrees. Overnight lows as cold as minus 10 to minus 12 degrees.”
He added that temperatures on Saturday will improve slightly with a daytime high of around zero with overnight lows below zero.
Over the course of the last couple of days the Kenora, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout areas have all been under a Winter Storm Warning.
Red Lake is going to get the same snowfall amount as Kenora with 20-40 cm projected, and Sioux Lookout is estimated to get around 20 cm of snow.
Will the bulk of the snow falling on Wednesday night into Thursday, Environment Canada continues advising against travel as surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
The Manitoba RCMP issued a statement on Tuesday night (April 12, 2022), that they will close all major highways in Southeastern Manitoba. On Wednesday morning, they said they will continue to assess the highway conditions.
At this time, Highway 75 from Morris to the Canada/U.S. border, and Highway 1 from Elie to Austin are officially closed.
