Nominations open today for the 2022 Municipal Election!
Kenora Mayor Dan Reynard has previously confirmed he will run again for re-election in 2022. Reynard won the Mayor’s seat in the 2018 election with over 4,000 more votes than any other candidate.
The final day to file a nomination is August 19 by 2 p.m. Municipal and school board elections are set for October 24, with in-person, online and phone voting. Residents will elect Kenora’s Mayor and six councillors, five separate school board trustees and three public school board trustees.
Candidates are encouraged to make an appointment to file nomination papers. To schedule an appointment, residents are asked to contact Returning Officer Heather Pihulak at 807-467-2295 or by email at hpihulak@kenora.ca.
The city is also hosting two virtual information workshops on May 3 and May 11 to provide guidance on roles and responsibilities of council and staff, the public’s role and the difference between governance and administration. Candidates, spouses and more are all invited to attend. You can register by contacting Heather Pihulak.
To vote, you must be a Kenora resident who either you or your spouse owns or rents property in the city, you must be a Canadian citizen, must be 18-years-old by election day and you must not be prohibited from voting as outlined in the Municipal Act. You’ll need to bring two pieces of photo identification which includes your name and address.
Residents can also find more information on the election at the city’s new kenoravotes.ca website. It helps provide information on finding a nomination, registering to vote, candidate profiles and answers a number of frequently asked questions.
Eligible voters are encouraged to make sure they are on the Municipal and School Board Elections voters’ list by visiting VoterLookup.ca, which is separate than the provincial election’s voter list.
That’s not the only election taking place on October 24. The Kenora District Services Board is also hosting their local Territory Without Municipal Organization Election to elect members to represent the Lac Seul area, Oxdrift, Lake of the Woods North and Lake of the Woods South.
