Many people in the St. Laurent area were hoping to get lucky and take home some big money last weekend. A massive Chase the Ace jackpot was guaranteed to go with just one card left - the ace.
After selling close to $80,000 in tickets alone Saturday, the jackpot grew to just over $140,000 for the "Chase The Ace" event held by the St. Laurent legion. People came from all over the area and as far away as Alberta and many were tense to see who would win.
Michael Leost of Winnipeg ended up taking home the fat stack of cash. Leost has family connections to the community and had attended a few of the events leading up to the big finish.
President of the legion in St. Laurent, Marion Furey, says the weekend was a success, noting that people were anxious just to get in the door and see if they had won.
Furey adds that a lot of work went into making this event possible, from volunteers to board members. She thanked everyone who helped them, "Chase The Ace."
Sergeant at arms Paul Sanderson said he has never seen anything like it while Secretary-Treasurer Colleen Sanderson added the extra money will be a huge boost for the Legion. She added many new memberships were sold as the jackpot grew which was also a bonus.
The 50/50 for the day was also a huge success with almost $25,000 in tickets sold. Loretta Sigurdson was the lucky winner of just under $12,500 in that draw.
Even though the game will reset to 52 cards and a jackpot of $1000 this weekend, the board is hoping the many people that came out will continue to support the fundraiser.
