The Calder family has another championship to add to their resume. Last night, in front of over 1400 fans in Steinbach, the Dauphin Kings won the Turnbull Cup by defeating the Pistons 2-1 in a deciding Game 7 match.
Logan Calder of Portage was key to the Kings victory scoring a short-handed goal in the second period to tie the game at one. The Kings would add one in the third to complete the comeback win and take home the title. The Kings had also been down 3 games to 2 in the best of seven series.
The former Terrier captain was sent to Dauphin near the trade deadline in a move the team really didn't want to make. But with Calder in his final season of junior hockey and the Terriers building for next year, head coach and GM Blake Spiller felt it would be best for all if Calder was shipped to a team that had a good chance to win this season. And win they did - with Calder a huge part of it. He led the Kings in the final series with 4 goals and 2 assists.
Calder and the Kings will now head to the National Championships next week in Estevan. Calder's brother Kian will also be a part of the event with his team, the Estevan Bruins. The Bruins are the host team but also recently won the SJHL in a series that also took 7 games. In that deciding match, Kian scored the game-winner to lead his team to victory over the Flin Flon Bombers. The two brothers will not have to play against each other though unless they meet up in the playoff rounds. The two teams are in different pools.
Carson Cherepak, goaltender of the Kings was named the MJHL playoff MVP.
