Rain, rain and more rain. That is what Environment Canada is forecasting this weekend, into early next week.
Meteorologist Peter Kimbell, says a storm system is moving its way north from the Dakota’s into northwestern Ontario, with the majority of the rain coming on Sunday.
“Sunday and Monday is when we do expect rain. Particularly Sunday and Sunday night. I can’t really tell you when the rain will start, because there is some model variability with that front. We could be getting 15 to 20 mm of rain Sunday and Sunday night. Likely letting up on Monday.”
As we head into the weekend, Friday has a 30 per cent of rain throughout the day, while Kimbell adds that Saturday (May 28, 2022) is forecasting a small chance of showers.
More moisture is the last thing the region needs, as it has been a historic spring in terms of water levels, which has caused flooding, washed out roads, evacuations, and much more.
The level of Lake of the Woods is now above the 2014 peak, according to the Lake of the Woods Control Board (LWCB). The current level of Lake of the Woods is 323.79 m (1062.3 ft), which is over 95th percentile level for this time of year.
In 2014, Lake of the Woods reached 323.78 m (1062.29 ft). The lake does remain below the record level of 324.31 m (1064.0 ft) which was set in 1950.
Since April 1, 2022, to May 27, 2022, the region has received 250.6 mm of combined precipitation, compared to the 80.3 mm seen in the same time frame last year. The over 300 cm of snow northwestern Ontario saw over the winter, which broke a 61-year-old snow record hasn’t helped the cause either.
Though the region is getting more unwanted rain, Kimbell says the temperatures over the next few days will be in the seasonal range.
“The normal high is around 20 degrees for this time of the year, and that’s pretty much what were looking over the next few days. 24 today (Friday), which is a nice day today, 21 tomorrow (Saturday), and around 20 on the weekend with the showers.”
