A 27-year-old Winnipeg man has been taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.
Portage la Prairie RCMP say they responded to a break and enter report at a business in Portage at approximately 3:50 a.m. on June 15. Officers approached the suspect vehicle on Highway 1, where the officer attempted to stop the suspect.
Police allege their vehicle was rammed several times, and the suspect attempted to run the vehicle off the road. The police vehicle was pinned between the suspect vehicle and the trailer it was towing. As the officer exited their vehicle, the suspect allegedly swerved toward the officer before fleeing. During the incident, shots were fired by the officer involved. The officer received minor physical injuries.
The suspect was apprehended shortly afterward by other officers from the Portage Detachment.
The 27-year-old man was arrested for multiple offences, including Attempted Murder of Police. He was transported to the hospital. The injuries appear to be non-life-threatening. He remains in hospital.
A spokesperson with the RCMP says that this incident was the reason for two road closures around the Portage area, one on Highway 1 near Oakville and the other on Saskatchewan Ave East.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and investigating the situation.
RCMP Major Crime Services is leading the ongoing investigation.
