Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a report of theft at a business in the 2400 block of Saskatchewan Avenue, which ended up leading to much more than just theft charges
On June 25th, around 11:50 am, Portage Officers were advised that two men had entered an establishment, filled up a shopping cart with items and ran out of the store without paying.
An employee confronted the suspects in the parking lot and got physically assaulted as he tried to prevent them from loading up the stolen items.
The suspects quickly fled the scene in a pickup truck which was discovered stolen out of Winnipeg.
Patrols were carried out in the area, and the suspect vehicle was located parked in a nearby parking lot with the stolen property still inside.
As the officers patrolled the area for the two suspects, they were then observed running out of the store, where they attempted to flee on foot. A short foot pursuit ensued, where they were arrested without incident.
A search of one of the suspects resulted in the seizure of a canister of bear mace and a small amount of a drug believed to be cocaine.
RCMP have charged Anthony Prince (30) and Robert Oigg (21), both from Winnipeg, with:
- Robbery with a Weapon
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purposes
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Resisting Arrest
They were both remanded into custody with a scheduled court appearance in Portage la Prairie.
Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
