Jared Miller threw 6 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball, and Blaine French hit a three-run blast in the second inning, as the Weyburn Beavers bounced back from Tuesday’s loss with a 9-3 win over the Moose Jaw Miller Express Wednesday night.
The bats for the beavers kept the bullpen of the Miller Express busy as well, as they would go through five pitchers, who combined for 12 hits and ten walks in the game, and only two of those pitchers lasted longer than two innings.
“That's a better resemblance of what our team should be – good starting pitching, guys coming in and slamming the door and some big bats,” said Beavers head coach Dusty Kerns after the game. “That’s kind of what I’d like to see going forward, and tonight was a good night; we needed it.”
The Beavers did most of the damage in the second inning when they put up six runs. It started when Braeden Cordes was walked with the bases loaded. The fourth walk of the inning for starting pitcher Jeremiyah Padilla would also spell the end of his night, as Cam O’Reilly came in.
O’Reilly would proceed to give up a double to left field from Nolan Machibroda that scored two runs. Then, two batters later, French put the first pitch of the at-bat over the fence in left field to make it a 6-0 game.
“It felt great,” French said about the home run. “I was looking fastball first pitch, lefty lefty, I got it, and put a good swing on it.”
In the fifth inning, Moose Jaw managed to get a run in, without recording a hit, thanks to a passed ball after the base runner managed to advance to third on a stolen base and an error. Despite the setback, Miller would finish his outing on the mound without giving up a hit over the 6 1/3 innings.
“I knew he had a good night,” said Dusty Kerns, who didn’t realize it was a no-hitter at the time Miller was replaced on the mound by Ryan Jundt. “The only reason I pulled him was because of his pitch count. Other than that, he’s been doing a phenomenal job for me this summer.”
The Beavers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they again welcomed a new pitcher with a hit, this time a single to left field from Caelen Dalman. Nick Baker then scored on a wild pitch, and Travis Moore brought in Dalman with a single to centre field.
Jundt, in his first appearance at Tom Laing Park, gave up five hits, and allowed two runs, neither earned, in 2 2/3 innings of work, while also striking out four batters.
The Beavers, who are now 7-15 on the season, are back in action Thursday night as they travel to Swift Current for a game against the 57s.
