The NWHU says COVID-19 cases are rising once again.
In a recent press release, The Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) is advising the public that COVID-19 cases are increasing across the communities in the region.
Currently, there are 315 active cases (according to PCR data) of COVID-19 in the region, with a percent positivity of 17.7 per cent, up from 12.8 per cent last week.
The NWHU says that the majority of the cases reside in the Sioux Lookout First Nation Health Authority, however, cases in other areas are continuing to increase.
As well as increased case numbers, current data shows an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations.
“The current wave we are in is showing more severe infection, leading to an increase in hospitalizations,” says Dr. Kit Young Hoon, Medical Officer of Health at the NWHU.
“It is even more important now that individuals consider practicing prevention measures like masking in enclosed public spaces, enhanced hand hygiene, and staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccine doses.”
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, announced on July 13, 2022, that anyone over the age of 18 can now get a second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine starting on July 14.
The NWHU encourages anyone who is eligible to be vaccinated, to stay up to date with their vaccines. Anyone looking for a dose can visit their local pharmacy, health care provider, or book into one of the NWHU’s clinics.
