A former member of the Kenora OPP has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release after a sexual abuse of two minors case in Minnesota.
Court documents state that on June 22, 2018, 33-year-old Canadian Brady John Hillis, now 37, was at the Fortune Bay Resort and Casino on the Bois Forte Indian Reservation when he was captured on security video engaging in sexual contact with two victims who were under the age of 12.
Hillis plead guilty to the offence on January 18, 2022.
The OPP has confirmed Hillis had been suspended under Ontario’s Police Services Act and resigned from the OPP on the same day as his guilty plea.
"Police officers are held to a higher behavioural standard both on duty and off because of the powers entrusted to them, and because they are sworn to uphold the law," wrote the OPP, in a prepared statement.
"The OPP is proud of the high behavioural standards of its employees but, regrettably, there are instances when OPP employees have been charged with criminal offences."
On July 19, Hillis was sentenced in the U.S. District Court before Judge John R. Turnheim. The case was the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI and the Bois Forte Police Department.
Hillis has also been banned from ever returning to the Bois Forte territory.
