It has been a busy start to the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, ON, for some of the local Moose Jaw athletes that are competing for Saskatchewan.

It all got going for the Women’s Box Lacrosse on Sunday as Moose Jaw’s Mykenzie Shymko, who was named their captain earlier, and Team Saskatchewan took on Team Manitoba in their first game of the event. This would be the inaugural game of Women’s Box Lacrosse at the games.

Sammy Riou would score the first ever goal for the sport at the 13:40 mark of the first period to put Saskatchewan up 1-0 after the first period. Manitoba would strike twice with goals about two minutes apart to take the lead 2-1 after two periods.

Earlier on in the third period, Manitoba would add one to extend their lead to 3-1. Shymko would get her first of the tournament to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Keystone province would respond with two to win 5-2.

On Monday, Saskatchewan’s next opponent would be PEI, and they looked in full control midway through the second period taking a 4-0 lead with Shymko adding her second of the tournament. PEI would storm back adding three goals of their own to cut the lead to 5-3 through two periods.

PEI would score two goals in the third period to finish the game with a 5-5 tie.

Later Monday afternoon, the green and yellow would take on Quebec. Though a good effort, Saskatchewan was shutout 4-0, with Quebec scoring one in the first period, two in the second, and one in the third. Saskatchewan’s record going into Tuesday is 0-1-2. They will play New Brunswick on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. CST.

Moving from the rink to the field, Moose Jaw’s Makena Simmons and Katie Newberry were in action early on in the Summer Games.

Saskatchewan would open their event with a 7-0 dominating win against Nova Scotia on Sunday. Simmons would go one-for-three with a triple in the win, while Newberry pitched one shutout inning, striking out two batters.

PEI would be Saskatchewan’s next opponent on Monday, and like Nova Scotia, it was a 7-0 shutout. Simmons would go hitless on three at-bats with an RBI. Newberry did not see any action. Monday afternoon, Saskatchewan would take on Manitoba. Simmons would pick up the lone hit in a 3-0 loss. Manitoba would score one in the first, third, and fourth inning to secure the win. Newberry pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing no hits or runs while striking out one.

They will be back in action on Tuesday to close out round-robin play against the 3-0 Team BC at 12:00 p.m. CST.

Moose Jaw’s Harry Lin was able to get the job done in his singles match taking down his New Brunswick opponent Jeff Bodner in men's tennis in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Saskatchewan took the win over NB 5-1. Lin and Team Saskatchewan are back on the court taking on Manitoba on Tuesday morning, which began at 9:00 a.m.

Damian Chartrand from Caronport debuted in the 50-metre backstroke and came up just short of reaching the final. He finished eighth in his heat with a time of 33.27 seconds, missing the ‘B’ final by 1.26 seconds.

Makaya Arnott will be in the pool on Thursday when she competes in the 50-metre freestyle.
