A number of Moose Jaw and area athletes had a busy Day 4 at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, ON, on Tuesday.
Starting things off was Mykenzie Shymko in Women’s Box Lacrosse, as they took on Team New Brunswick. It looked like they had full control, but New Brunswick fought their way back, winning 5-3, in Saskatchewan’s final round-robin play of the event.
New Brunswick would get things rolling only 28 seconds into the game taking the early 1-0 lead. Saskatchewan would later tie the game at 1-1, with under two minutes left in the first period.
The game would remain tied until the third period. Early in the third, then Shymko would get her third and fourth goals of the game putting Saskatchewan in front 3-1 with just under 13 minutes left.
New Brunswick would counter with four unanswered goals to win the game 5-3. Saskatchewan finishes round-robin play with a 0-1-3 record. They will play a qualification game against PEI on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. to advance to the quarterfinals.
On the tennis court, Harry Lin took on Jacob Yee from Manitoba on Tuesday morning. He swept the match in straight sets 6-2 and 6-3, to add to Saskatchewan's 5-1 win over Manitoba.
Lin lost his first match of the games on Tuesday afternoon to Nova Scotia’s Mark Rainne in straight sets 6-0 and 7-6. Saskatchewan was still able to pull out the 4-3 win over Nova Scotia overall in team play. Saskatchewan finished a perfect 3-0 in pool play.
From the court to the diamond, Saskatchewan was able to shut out the previously undefeated Team BC 2-0 in their final round-robin game of the games.
Moose Jaw’s Makena Simmons did not register a hit, but earned herself a walk, and scored one of the two runs on the day. Katie Newberry did not see any action in the win, starter Jorde Chartrand pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits and striking out seven. Saskatchewan finishes pool play with a 3-1 record. They will play the winner of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Briercrest’s Alexa Aikens has been in action for Saskatchewan in Rugby Sevens. Saskatchewan opened up the games with a 19-10 loss to Alberta on Sunday. Aikens did not crack the score sheet. They would follow that up with a 22-19 win to New Brunswick on Monday. Aikens earned herself a Try, which is five points for her team.
Saskatchewan would drop their third game against Nova Scotia 15-10 on Tuesday afternoon. She would be held off the scoresheet in the loss. The green and yellow would finish round-robin play with a 26-5 loss to Ontario. Aikens would go scoreless, and Saskatchewan would finish pool play with a 1-3 record.
Aikens and Saskatchewan will play Manitoba in a consolation game on Wednesday at 3:44 p.m.
Makaya Arnott will be in the pool on Thursday when she competes in the 50-metre freestyle.
