The 2022 season will be one to remember for the Airdrie Irish.
The Airdrie club had their best season ever since joining the loop in 2015. They finished the regular season with just one loss in the six games they played. The team finished tied for second and ended up hosting the first home field playoff game of their history which ended up in a decisive win over the defending champion Central Alberta Buccaneers.
That put them into the league semi-finals, a game in which they travelled north to take on the Edmonton Elite who they promptly dispatched 35 - 15 to advance to their first league championship game in team history.
The Irish made the long trek to Cold Lake yesterday (August 20) to learn that all good things must come to an end. Airdrie took on the unbeaten Fighter Jets, the only team they'd lost to this season. Now you can make that, "lost to twice" this season as the Jets claimed the AFL championship with a resounding 55 - 0 drubbing of the Irish.
Cold Lake came storming out of the gate yesterday, charging to a 37 - 0 lead at the half, putting the game out of reach for the Irish who were missing a number of key pieces of their team.
The Fighter Jets have put together a perfect season so far and will try to finish it out by winning the Canadian Major Football League National Championship game. Cold Lake will play host to the GTA All-Stars in September.
Going into yesterday's contest, the Irish got tremendous support from their fans on social media. Among the backers who wished them well were Councillors Tina Petrow and Heather Spearman.
