The overwhelming support from the community has made this year’s Burgers to Beat MS Day the biggest ever in Kenora!

Through collecting $2 from every Teen Burger, rounding up at the till and a variety of their own fundraisers, Kenora’s A&W Restaurant raised $40,584.28 on August 18– shattering last year’s record of just over $37,000, when Kenora’s A&W was named the top fundraising restaurant in the country.

Owner Randy Nickle made the announcement live on social media yesterday afternoon, noting they are still waiting for A&W’s national fundraising totals, with a target of $1.5 million, and to see if they are top A&W in Canada for the third year in a row.

“We couldn’t do this without everybody that participated,” said Nickle. “Our till round-ups alone were $10,000. Sorry for bothering you every time you come through the drive-thru, but it made an astronomical difference in our totals. Shout out to everybody. Thank you very much.”

This year was the 14th annual Burgers to Beat MS Day in Canada. Between 2008 and 2021, A&W has raised over $17 million to support Canadians living with MS.

The Mayo Clinic says Multiple Sclerosis is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord, and 12 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day on average.

With MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibres and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves.
