Construction has started on a new cemetery for the City of Morden.
In the spring of 2019, the City purchased approximately 54 acres of land on the south side of Lake Minnewasta with the intention to use some of that area for a new cemetery.
Director of Parks and Urban Forestry, Shawn Dias, explained how the land will be divided.
"With the setback in mind, we were able to get an area that was approximately eight acres in the southeast corner of the property that was purchased," he said. "That leaves us with the remaining 45 to 46ish acres budding up to the lake and on the south side of the lake. We will look to plan that space as part of our Parks and Urban Forestry Master Plan and see how we can utilize some of that space for public use."
With Hillside Cemetery reaching capacity, Dias commented on the need for this new cemetery.
"I think it's something that is obviously near and dear to all of us as individuals, is to have our family members and close relatives and loved ones in a place close to the community. This provides that opportunity for people in the public now and for hopefully serving the community for the next 25 years."
Plots at the new cemetery are expected to go on sale sometime next year.
