Ronald George Schmidt
January 4, 1939 – September 4, 2022

Ronald was born to Adolf and Edith (née Myatt) Schmidt on November 13, 1934, at the Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He grew up on the family farm south of Carmel, SK. He was the second youngest of five children and attended Golden Acre School, near his home. After completing his schooling, he stayed home and helped on the family farm. Ron’s working career started out by helping neighbours with different jobs. From there he progressed to working for the RM of Wolverine, building roads. During this time, Ron met Rita Duerr, at a community social in Dixon. Ron and Rita were married in Humboldt, SK on September 8, 1958. A year later they welcomed their first blessing, a daughter, Karen. Ron then changed jobs and became a milkman in Humboldt. During this time, the family was blessed with two more children, first, Brian and a year later Ken. A new job opportunity had Ron buying grain for the Searle Grain Co. The couple was then blessed with their third son, Garry. At this time, Ron and family transferred to Jansen, SK where Ron became the grain buyer at Federal Grain Co. Four years later Ron transferred once more to Lanigan, SK. While in Lanigan the family welcomed their second daughter and blessing, Colleen. One more career change took Ron to Alwinsal Potash Mine in Lanigan, SK. During this time, he took courses in Saskatoon to obtain his journeyman welder status. Ron worked as a welder until his retirement, at the age of sixty-five. Ron was well known for his strong work ethic and was an active member of the Lanigan Knights of Columbus. During his retirement years, Ron enjoyed camping, fishing trips, playing music and cards, working in his shop, and visiting with family and friends. Ron and Rita took many bus trips, his favourite being a trip to Nashville and Branson. Ron will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of almost 64 years, Rita and their five children: Karen (Bryan), Brian (Doreen), Ken (Marj), Garry (Sherry) and Colleen (Sheldon); their 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; brother Harland (Marlene); brother-in-law Wilbert Duerr; sister-in-law Ruth Fetter (Rod); and numerous nieces and nephews. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Adolf and Edith; and Rita’s parents, Ambrose and Veronica Duerr; one brother and two sisters, and their spouses. The Funeral Mass for Ronald was on offered on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, in Lanigan, Saskatchewan and celebrated by Fr. Gregory Smith-Windsor.
