Margaret (Marnie) Lundin
August 11, 1929 – September 5, 2022

Margaret Louise (Marnie) Lundin (nee McMullen) passed away unexpectedly on September 5, 2022 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, with family by her side.

Marnie was the beloved wife of Ron Lundin; loving mother of Heather, Janet, Stephen, and Cathy; supportive mother-in-law to Randy, Joel, Marie, and Rob; cherished grandma of Aaron (Celine) and Calder Shapland, Noah and Madeline Gilfix, Stephanie (Dave) Novak and Blake (Ellie) Lundin, Tanner (Emily) and Olivia (Matt) Neill; and great-grandmother known as GiGi to Holly, Rohan, and Magnolia Novak, and Lucas Carvalho.

Marnie and her twin sister Eleanor were born in Kitchener-Waterloo to William Stanley McMullen and Annie Margaret Calder. At just over three pounds each they were not expected to survive and received last rites from an Anglican priest. But with an abundance of love and nurturing, and determination in their DNA, the twins thrived. They were raised with their younger brother Bill amongst their extended Scottish and Irish family in southern Ontario.

An ambitious student, Marnie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto and a post-graduate certification in Education and Family Studies. She and a girlfriend then spent a year overseas and cycled through Europe. They funded their adventures by working in London, England where Marnie taught school. Afterwards, Marnie accepted a teaching assignment in Kenora, and it was there that she met her charming, blue-eyed husband. Together, they raised four active children and taught them to value education, travel, teamwork, and respect.

For forty years, Marnie inspired students through her teaching at various schools in Kenora. Throughout her life she contributed to the community through Young Life, 4-H, church groups, and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was part of a close-knit Bridge club for decades, participated in Scottish country dancing, and enjoyed symphonies, operas, stage shows, and horse races. Marnie also loved globe-trotting with Ron on numerous occasions. She spent endless hours on her sewing machine creating wardrobes for her family as well as perfectly fitted wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses. Marnie valued enormously the friendships she developed over the years, each of which enriched her life immensely.

Above all, family was at the core of Marnie’s life. She and Ron ensured that each member of their family felt loved and valued. Marnie and Ron were enthusiastic supporters of their eight grandchildren at hockey, volleyball and soccer games, bagpipe band events, and fishing tournaments. They nurtured their development by supporting education, encouraging travel, and maintaining traditions such as Marnie’s annual Christmas shortbread baking with her granddaughters. Marnie left this world knowing that her family will continue being supportive of each other, and that connections will stay strong as the family expands.

To the very end, Marnie had a full calendar and an active to-do list. She was always busy and made every moment of her life count. At age 93, her time with us came to an end, and she made her way to heaven to join Ron, her husband of 65 years who passed away in 2021

Marnie received exceptional in-home support from Home Care and Community Support Services after Ron’s passing. She had settled beautifully into Pinecrest Home the month prior to her own passing and a new lease on life allowed her to dine with fellow residents, access the beautiful garden, and be supported by the talented staff. The family extends its sincere appreciation for the care she received in-home, at Pinecrest, and at hospital.

Marnie was predeceased by her husband Ron, her parents William & Margaret McMullen, her brother William B. McMullen and wife Lorie, her twin sister Eleanor Thompson and husband Walt, Ron’s parents Victor & Ester Lundin, and all of Ron’s siblings and their spouses: Shirley Lundin, Helen Lundin, Agnes Paul (Lawrence), Sally Golder (Noel), Stan Lundin (Isabel), Hilding Lundin (Verna), Evelyn Storey Paul (Keith/Lawrence), and Esther Edmonds (Bert).

A funeral for Marnie Lundin will be held at 11:00am on Fri. Sept. 23, 2022 at Knox United Church. A joint Celebration of Life for Ron & Marnie will follow as a Come & Go Reception between 12:00-2:00pm at The Old Armouries. A private family interment will take place prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers and if friends and family so desire, a donation to Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation in memory of Margaret (Marnie) Lundin would be much appreciated.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.brownfuneralhomekenora.com for the Lundin family.
